Son Dong

For many years, Quang Binh provice was never considered a “must – see destination” for tourists. But every thing changed with the discovery of Son Doong, the world’s largest cave, in the heart of Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, which is also home to Thien Duong Cave and Tien Son Cave.   – By Dung Nhi – heritage

Originally found by a local man name Ho Khanh in 1991, the cave was more recently explored in 2009 by team of British cavers, led by Howard Limbert, who were understandably astounded at what they found.

Formed two to five million years ago by river water eroding away the limestone underneath the mountain (where the limestone was weak, the ceiling collapsed creating the huge caves) the cave is now one of the most talked about natural wonders of the world.

Don’t believe us? Son Doong was ranked eighth in a New York Times travel feature on the world’s 52 most attractive destinations in 2014. It has also been featured by thee huffington Post, Natinal Geographic Foxnews, The Mirror and the Guardian, A picture of the cave was posted on Yahoo Bing’s search engine homepage to publicize the awe – inspring beauty of Son Doong.

Currently, tour in to the caveare possible, but numbers are limited. Between February and the and of August, these it a limit of 500 permits  available. Tourists need a good level of finess and experience for this cave adventure.

So far only a few lucky people have been able to camp overnight inside the world’s largest cave. The Australian photographer John spies said in one newspaper feature,” It is amazing to be 3-4 km inside the cave and have daylight illuminate the cave. Formatins. The dimensionsof the cave are incredible and to camp for five nights in the biggest cave in the world is not something most of get to do in out lifetime.”

At more than 200m high, 150m wide and 5 km long, Son Doong cave is so big it essentially has its own river, jungle and climate.” With ceillings towering over 200 metres high in places, the cave is a humbling and belittling experience, “ said Spies.

Dong Hoi not simply a stopover

The sudden emergence of Phong Nha – Ke Bang national park as well as a well know tourist destination is goog news for the city of Dong Hoi, which is now determined to ensure that it is now simply seen as a transit hub for traveler.

The province of Quang Binh is also blessed with a long stretch of coastline that features a nuber of wonderful beaches. Visitors should check out Nhat Le or Bao Ninh beachs, both of which are near tehe center of Dong Hoi. At both beachs you will find white sand, clear blue water and, of caurse, amazing seafood is never far aways.

By the banks of Nhat Le river, locals often gather to eat seafood. You will find hucksters grilling or steaming seafood with the use of small charcoal stove. Squid, prawns, oysters, grouper, plaice, seabass… and many more kinds of fish and seafood are always available!

Other sites include Quang Phu hillock, Da Nhay beach, Bang mineral hot spring, and Mooc spring. Da Nhay beach is another white sand set against a rugged stretch of coastline. Inside the adjacent mountain, you will find big and small stalactites of all shapes and sizes. Amongst the rocks Mystical creatures and figures are apparent and appear to be slithering to toward the sea.
